Custom Box Pleat on Functional Draperies

Box pleats are often favored for their flat, clean look. A typical box pleat is stitched down on the reverse of the drapery header, which prevents stacking and moving - which tends to leave it, well, not functional. Box pleats are typically used on stationary drapery panels, when the purpose of the drapery is to frame the window.

So when your client requests ‘functional box pleats’ you may wonder, can this be done? The answer is yes, and we are happy to tell you how!

First, we looked at an inverted box pleat, however fabric weight became problematic. Especially with this being a heavy linen with a large repeating pattern. There was not enough take up in the pleats to provide the fullness we desired - 300 fullness with that very large pattern repeat.

This would require a four pronged inverted pleat, however that would mean the weight would be too heavy to tack the pleats together. That meant we had to adjust spacing and take up for a two prong inverted pleat. This would allow us to keep the backing on the pleat compatible with the traversing of the rod and rings.

With a 62 inch vertical repeat and 35 in horizontal repeat, matching the panels and seams provided a challenge.

In the end we decided to go with the two prong inverted pleat, stitched in the channel to secure from the back. We also employed drapery pins to keep it from tipping forward - resulting in style and functionality.
